Last night we had a combined FHE lesson with my family. Even though it was a week late, we had a lesson about Easter. It was nice to hear the story of the crucifixion and resurrection again. One thought that hit me last night was how much Christ must have been suffering when he prayed, "Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done." (St Luke 22:42)
Think of everything the Savior had done up until this point. He knew what was coming. Our perfect elder knew what was going to happen, it wasn't His first choice to continue on, but He knew there was no other way for the rest of us to be saved. He said, "not my will, but thine, be done". He submitted Himself to the Father's will and because He did, we have the opportunity to live with our Father in Heaven again.
Can you imagine the pain our Father in Heaven experienced while watching His son suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane and then during His trial and crucifixion? My heart aches to the breaking point when I see my children go through trials and they're only 5 and 3---their trials are nothing compared to what the Savior suffered. Think of how much our Father must love us. We are His children. His heart must ache when He watches us suffer. However; just as I know my children will learn from their trials, He knows we will learn from ours. It's not enjoyable, it hurts, but it's necessary for us to progress. The Savior's sacrifice was vital for all of us. It had to be done.
Elder Holland's talk made me think about how much I wish could have offered comfort to the Savior during His suffering. Obviously there is nothing I could have done, but to think of His suffering alone makes me wish I could have taken action. I like to think we were all in Heaven sending our love His way, gratitude filling our hearts.
"One of the great consolations of this Easter season is that because Jesus walked such a long lonely path utterly alone, we do not have to do so. . . . May we declare ourselves to be more fully disciples of the Lord Jesus Chris, not in word only and not in the flush of comfortable times. But in deed and in courage and in faith. May we stand by Jesus Christ at all times, and in all things, and in all places that we may be in, even until death. For surely that is how he stood by us, when it was unto death, and when he had to stand entirely and utterly alone." (Elder Jeffery R. Holland)
This quote from Elder Holland's talk has helped given me a greater resolve to set aside the things of the world. Nothing on this earth is as important and following the Savior's example and living so we can return to our Father in Heaven. NOTHING!

I was so happy when they came out with this video. I wanted to use his talk in YW on Easter, but the whole thing was so incredible, I couldn't imagine how I'd choose what to use. Then, I saw this video! Since I couldn't actually save the video to my computer, and I didn't think I'd get the internet at the church, I loaded the page on my computer, played the video and then brought my laptop to church with the page still open and prayed it would work if I just hit replay. The sound was a little skippy, but with the subtitles it turned out ok. I was so glad, because I never could have said it as well as Elder Holland. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, are you sure you don't want to come back to Philly and be in YW with me? ;) You are inspirational to me.
